For anyone who likes Elderberry syrup, it doesn't get better than our Double Batch Organic Elderberry Syrup Kit. We provide you easy to follow instructions, but basically, you are adding pure water which you bring to a boil & immediately simmer for an hour to an hour and half, cool, strain, and add raw honey. Storing in a glass container, plastic lid (mason jar works great), maybe have a smaller container for daily dosing.
Each ingredient in our Elderberry Syrup Kit was selected for it's health properties, but also please note that source is important as well. For example Elderberries are grown everywhere, but our DIY dry kit only contains renown European Organic Elderberries, whose benefits are as follows:
- High in vitamin C: There are 6–35 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams of fruit, which accounts for up to 60% of the recommended daily intake (3, 4).
- High in dietary fiber: Elderberries contain 7 grams of fiber per 100 grams of fresh berries, which is over one-quarter of the recommended daily intake (4).
- A good source of phenolic acids: These compounds are powerful antioxidants that can help reduce damage from oxidative stress in the body (4, 5).
- A good source of flavonols: Elderberry contains the antioxidant flavonols quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin. The flowers contain up to 10 times more flavonoids than the berries (4).
- Rich in anthocyanins: These compounds give the fruit its characteristic dark black-purple color and are a strong antioxidant with anti-inflammatory effects (4, 6).

We love Elderberry Syrup and make batches year around, but especially fall and winter seasons. This batch is plenty for the whole family, it will last approximately 2-3 months refrigerated. We refrigerate in a large mason jar, refilling a smaller container for our daily use each week.
How does it work?
Elderberry may affect the immune system because it seems to have activity against viruses, including the flu, and it also seems to reduce inflammation. You can read the benefits of each ingredient, and overall how you may benefit from daily dose of elderberry syrup.
More about Elderberry From WebMD:
Elderberry is the dark purple berry from the European elder tree. The berries are used to make medicine. Do not confuse elderberry with American Elder, Elderflower, or Dwarf Elder.
NOTE: We have inserted the term Brewed Syrup or Tea in WebMD's below descriptions, because it is our understanding you must always brew elderberry
- Some people take elderberry (brewed syrup) by mouth for the common cold, "the flu" (influenza), and H1N1 "swine" flu. It is also taken by mouth (brewed syrup or tea) for HIV/AIDS and boosting the immune system. Elderberry is also taken by mouth (brewed syrup or tea) for sinus pain, back and leg pain (sciatica), nerve pain (neuralgia), and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).
Some people also take elderberry by mouth (brewed syrup or tea) for hay fever (allergic rhinitis), cancer, as a laxative for constipation, to increase urine flow, and to cause sweating. It is also used for heart disease, high cholesterol, headache, toothache, and weight loss.
Some people apply elderberry to the inside the mouth for gum inflammation.
Potential Side Effects
Elderberry is something your doctor should always be consulted about, especially if any of the following apply:
According to organicfacts.net, and note we agree and disclaim the same information, side effects of elderberries may include the following.
- Since most of the raw berries are toxic, caution is suggested and cooking the elderberries before consuming is definitely a wise choice.
- Note: The branches, leaves, and twigs of all species contain trace elements of cyanide - be sure you are purchasing ONLY the berry and not the branches, leaves, and twigs.
- Furthermore, being allergic to plants in the honeysuckle family is not uncommon, so be careful about being up-to-date on your food allergies before adding elderberries to your diet.
- Finally, they are known to act as diuretics for some people, so if you are already struggling with kidney problems, then elderberries may exacerbate them.
Despite the implicit risks of elderberries, they are packed with beneficial nutrients, so they have been a part of traditional medicine for hundreds of years, and some of the health benefits have even made it to the mainstream.
